The re-introduction of checkpoints can be considered a necessary measure in the battle to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic. The entrances of markets and residential areas sees checkpoints set up to control all incoming and outgoing vehicles, this is done with the aim of protecting against the COVID-19. Forces stationed at the checkpoints are from a variety of agencies, such as the fatherland front, veterans’ association, women’s union, and youth union. Pham Quang Tieu, head of residential group No. 13 in Trai Cau ward of Le Chan district says that from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. the checkpoints are in operation. They are to remind local people of the need to wear face masks, have their body temperature measured, and take notes of their travel record. A man from residential group No. 6 in Nghia Xa ward of Le Chan district fails to wear a face mask. He is therefore required to immediately don one while also undergoing a body temperature check. By August 19 no one in residential group No. 6 in Nghia Xa ward had shown virus symptoms such as a cough or a fever, according to Nguyen Thi Chinh, head of the group. Security forces check every tourist before they are permitted to board the ferry to travel to Cat Ba island. People coming from COVID-19-hit localities are required to return to their hometown. The re-launch of checkpoints receives plenty of support from local people.
